A semi-truck plummeted off of an overpass early Wednesday morning seriously injuring the driver and passenger inside.
For almost an hour, emergency crews worked to rescue a truck driver and a passenger of a semi-truck that plunged 30 feet off of the I-471 overpass, in Mount Adams, Wednesday morning.
At approximately 3 a.m. the semi rolled off the overpass from northbound I-471 to 3rd Street and landed upside down on Monastery Street at the bottom of Mount Adams, according to police.
A team of approximately 30 rescue crew members worked to extricate the 53-year-old male driver and 55-year-old female passenger, who was sleeping in the sleeper berth at the time of the crash.
The driver and passenger were successfully extricated and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Their identities have not been released.
The semi was hauling gravel and large pieces of metal equipment.
Investigators said “excessive speed” was a factor in the driver being unable to safely negotiate the turn leading to the crash.
Police do not believe the driver was impaired at the time of the accident.
